TURTLE SNAKE
Symbolism: Turtle Snake Guardian is the Rain guardian of the north, he possess the power to rule water. And head among Gods, most of the time Hyeongo controls or guide the King to balance his feelings, emotions and decisions.
He serves as a teacher and helper to Sujini and a guide DamDeok with the help of GuhMools disciples.
GuhMools peoples’ mission is to gather facts observe all concerned people, to help/guide in finding the symbols and building the Joo Shin nation.
The symbol saves the Joo Shin King, DamDeok as well as Sujini and Dalgu from possible death
Weapon: Cane, which serves as guide which he believes that the Cane , symbol of Turtle Snake will protect him. The reason why he is not afraid to go to Gwanmi Fortress with the help of Jumuchi to save Sujini.
Requirements for Awakening: The key made by Lord Hwangwoon
1) the guardian and the King should be near/close to each other
2) emotions: awakens when the Joo Shi king is full of wrath/ dark wrath
Confirmation of True Guardian: when the cane lights up outside Dae Ja castle, time stop and only Hyongo and DD was standing (emotions: full of wrath) DamDeok is full of wrath upon the news that his father died in hands of Kiha the woman he love and the possible death of Julno’s people who blocked the arrows to save him from death.
Awakening/Glows on the Night of the Joo Shin Star: GuhMool’s Village- guardians of the Turtle Snake symbol. On episode 2 the symbols has some king of black smoke coming out of it which signifies that anyday on that time the Joo Shin King shall be born. Hyun su is the 71st Chief on that time.
When Sujini was about 10 years old at this time. Hyeongo was chosen by the Turtle Snake symbol as guardian. The black smoke that comes out from the symbol chose him as the new guardian and when he captured the smoke it become a Cane. Hyeongo- 72nd chief of the HuhMool Village. The 71st chief died.
WHITE TIGER
Symbolism : The White Tiger is the Wind Guardian of the west, serves an innocent booster to the king.
The symbol heals the guardian thus preventing/protecting him from possible death.
Weapon : Iron Axe is a symbol of authority and of the execution of military duty. It denotes a warlike quality of its bearer. Jumuchi is the chief of Malgal and his group is innocently helping DamDeok in building the Joo Shin Nation since they act as the mercenaries for DamDeok.
Requirements for Awakening: The key made by Lord Hwangwoon
1) the guardian and the King should be near/close to each other
2) emotions: awaits innocent/pure courage to be awakened
Confirmation of True Guardian: in Khitan, when Cheoro throw the spear to Hogae then the White tiger symbol went out from from his chest near left shoulder side then the symbol awakens and heals/revives Jumuchi (Innocent /pure courage for Jumuchi since he saved DamDeok from possible death by innocently blocking the sword that was thrown by Hogae.
In case of DamDeok, the possible Innocent /pure courage for DamDeok her is his courage to fought/challenge the Khitans with the knowledge that they are outnumbered. And afterhis duel with Hogae he walks away without hesitation and thinking that Hogae might stabbed him on his back after he spare Hogae’s life.
On episode 18. The subtitle stated: BulDol- the guardian of the white Tiger which means you can be called a guardian if you are the one protecting the symbol but not necessarily mean that you are the true guardian. He is keeping the symbol while waiting for the Joo Shin King and its guardian. He said to Hogae, that the symbol is cannot be used by a non-guardian
Awakening/Glows on the Night of the Joo Shin Star: The symbol of White Tiger awakens at Haeksu Malgal Blacksmith Village. No one is wearing the symbol when it glows. One of the villager saw the light. The symbol of White Tiger is awaken and they saw the lights .Bason’s father, Bason, BulDol and the rest of the blacksmith clan witnessed the glow.
It means that the symbols awakes/glow even if it is not in the possession/safekeeping of the true guardian.
Jumuchi is nowhere in this scene when it was awakened and he is a Malgal Chief. Since there’s no scenes that shows his family tree. Here’s some Possibilities:
1) Jumuchi’s mother is pregnant on the night of the Joo Shin Star when the symbols was awakens/glows on their village.
2) BulDol is a possible father of Jumuchi since Jumuchi is Chief of Malgal since Bason noticed that Jumuchi’s axe is deadly which means it was made by someone skillfull like her. Remember Jumuchi once said, This axe given to me by my father. I learned to wield this axe before I learned to walk.
BLUE DRAGON
Symbolism: Blue Dragon is the cloud guardian of the East , he has the power to rule woods. When your hope is clouded it gives hope and life. As Cloud guardian he can see everything in the sky.
The symbol heals the guardian thus preventing/protecting him from possible death
Weapon: Spear – the holy spear is able both to wound or destroy . It protect and save the life of the King and the other guardians. Cheoro can’t go without his Spear. Remember the following scenes where the spear saves the life of the King and the guardians:
-Saving DamDeok: He defeated the Hwachon leader by throwing the Spear, this time the symbols awakens. Upon seeing the glows from the symbol he took it and ready his spear.
-Saving Jumuchi and the King:Cheoro in an instant throw the spear to Hogae and the the White Tiger symbols was awaken and Jumuchi live again as the symbol saved him from death..
-He put his hands to Sujini’s forehead, he holds his spear firmly when he saw Sujini opened her eyes. Holding the spear tighly might possibly means as an act of defense (she’s the black phoenix) or a tight of hope for Sujini’s life.
-At Hwachons secret headquarters when he struck the enemy that may possibly kill Sujini.
-At the temple when Cheoro Uses his spear to stop SaRyang from attacking Sujini.
Requirements for Awakening: The key made by Lord Hwangwoon 1) the guardian and the King should be near/close to each other 2.) emotions: awaits cold purpose/cold mercy
Confirmation of True Guardian : in Yon’s residence, when Cheoro get the symbol as it glows on the floor, he throw the spear to Hwachon leader which ended the fight (emotions: awaits cold purpose)
In case of DamDeok, as he wanted to kill the Hwachon leader in rage this can be called a cold mercy/cold purpose
Awakening/Glows on the Night of the Joo Shin Star: When Cheoro’s father chose him as keeper/guardian: His father embedded the blue dragon symbol into his heart: the reason why he turns out as like a demon according to Hyeongo which means that the symbol can be in the possession of person that can be a guardian or non-guardian and he can use the power. Cheoro’s confirmation as true guardian is on Yon’s residence.
Releasing of Curse: in Gwanmi Castle, DamDeok used the heavenly bow to release Cheoro from the curse of the embedded symbol.
PHOENIX HEART
Requirements for Awakening: The key made by Lord Hwangwoon
1) the guardian and the King should be near/close to each other
2) emotions: scarlet passion from the Phoenix guardian and an out pouring of emotions of the Joo Shin King
Confirmation of True Guardian: The requirements to confirm the true guardian of the phoenix heart by awakening is none existence in the story ( the presence of Sujini and Damdeok in the same area in a close distance with outpouring of emotions of the King and a scarlet passion of the guardian)
Awakening/Glows on the Night of the Joo Shin Star
Mrs Hae chose Kiha to wear the Phoenix symbol. The symbol has a small glow when it pass across Sujini but doesn’t not glow when given to Kiha. The phoenix heart awakens/glows extinguished the fire while it is worn by Kiha and Sujini was inside the box near her at Sabi Castle Baekje.
Symbolism: Phoenix is the guardian of the south. A mythical bird that has the power to regenerate. The bird was also said to regenerate when hurt or wounded by a foe, thus being almost immortal and invincible — a symbol of fire and divinity
FIRE– The fire can provided humanity with protection, through its light and heat, against the many animals that might have attacked or hunted them. It has a supernatural force to destroy the world.
DIVINITY– in a way she regenerates, an immortal.
The symbol is not needed to be on her possession or near her to heal her wounds because she has the seal on her body as the phoenix.
Weapon: BOW -symbolizes emblem of Gods power, a judgement.
Confirmation of True Guardian by its characteristics:
First, she must have the power of fire. Second, she will not be able to control it. And third, the emblem of the phoenix will be revealed on her body… According to Guh Mools Hyun Jang.
If we’re going to the storylines, Hyeongo always speaks during or after the awakening of the symbols.
– Hyeongo said to Cheoro that he doesn’t know why he is the guardian of the
Turtle Snake but he is the chosen guardian.
– For Turtle Snake, dark wrath for blue dragon cold purpose…Cheoro chosen
guardian of blue dragon according to Hyeongo
– Jumuchi is chosen guardian of white tiger according to Hyeongo (ep 22)
– Sujini is possible guardian and black phoenix according to Hyoengo

SUJINI as the true guardian/ black phoenix.
The true guardian heals her wound on its own thus preventing/protecting her from possible death as she regenerates.
She can create and put out fire. She has the skill since she was young without the process of learning it. The thing that Kiha were not able to learn how to do so.
She was regarded by the GuhMool’s disciples as Mother of earth since she’s in pain and cries seeing injured people. And she helped them to recover. (Just like Seo)
She is stubborn like DamDeok. She keeps on entruding with others business which put her life in danger sometimes. She helps DamDeok in his way to become a King and help him realize what a King should be even if it causes her life.
She can control /create fire and Can put out/extinguish fire, Have a black phoenix mark on her body , regenerates as her wound heals on its own, skilled in archery , Seo is also skilled in archery.
Even without the possession of the phoenix heart symbol she has characteristics of the true phoenix because she have the mark of the phoenix on her forehead. The reason why the GuhMools people consider her as the possible phoenix eventhough Kiha has the possession of the symbol and declared herself as the guardian of the South

Scenes that may suggest Sujini’s genuinity as the true phoenix.
-When the phoenix heart has a little glow when she was a baby
-When the phoenix heart glows when Sujini and DamDeok were near to each other (Gooknae tournament field, Hwachon’s secret residence)
-When Hae’s house was burnt in fire, the phoenix heart put out the fire.
-When Sujini has a nightmare, the phoenix heart glows.
– When Sujini asked Kiha to put out the fire from Cheoro’s chest but Kiha said I can start fire, but I cannot put it out. Sujini put out the fire and SaRyang and kiha was surprised.
-When a true guardian struck someone with Heavenly blood/symbols he/she bounces back.( ex. Cheoro struck DamDeok with Spear, when Sujini struck Kiha bearing then child of DamDeok, when Cheoro he hit Hogae with his spear.
– When Sujini realizes that she’s the phoenix: Sujini: I couldn’t control myself. But regardless of what I wanted to do, I got angry, blocked the fire and struck a person. I attacked to kill…It’s like this, right? When the guardian of the Phoenix loses her mind… It’s like this, isn’t it? So then what does this mean? That means I’m the guardian of the Phoenix. This is insane ( She’s hesitant but she accepted her responsibilities as phoenix)
KIHA as the true guardian/ black phoenix.
1) Mrs Hae put on the phoenix heart necklace to Kiha with this messages: Protect her she is your baby sister, you can do that, don’t you? Kiha nodded.
– Her mother put on the phoenix heart necklace to Kiha with this messages: Protect her she is your baby sister, you can do that, don’t you? Kiha nodded.
BUTS: If you are the mother, you know that your youngest daughter is the phoenix, in what way you can protect her from the enemies? As the keeper of the phoenix heart, you have to mislead the enemies as not figure out that the baby is the phoenix and to do that you have to put the necklace to the non phoenix guardian. If the Guhmool’s people saw the phoenix mark on baby Sujini, what more of her mother, I assume that she had seen it before as the mother.
Possible reason why the mother put the phoenix heart to Kiha: to protect and keep the guardian alive for she is the helping hand of the Joo Shin King because as a baby Sujini cannot protect herself. As with DamDeok to mislead the people, his family never told anyone about his birth and they made his birthday on the 3rd day, the time his mother died. Reason: to protect and keep the Jooshin King alive because as baby DamDeok cannot protect himself.
The phoenix symbol put out the fire while Kiha wore the symbol .Kiha can create fire by cannot put it out but Sujini can create and put out the fire.
Sujini is down there in side the bean pot so it’s not only Kiha. It’s either the symbol protected Sujini or Kiha, whoever is the possible guardian.
And we cannot say that the symbol protects Kiha only. The symbol can protect the guardian even if he/she is not wearing it.
– Subttitle stated: Kiha-the reincarnation of the phoenix but she does not possess all the characteristic of a phoenix.
2) The phoenix heart glows when Kiha is dancing. The glow was seened by Mr Yon and the Hwachon leader
BUTS: Hwachon leader is not sure if Kiha is the owner of the symbol way back on episode 2. Remember when the Hwachon leader asks this questions to Kiha. Is it yours? Does this belongs to you? Did you put out the fire with the eye of the phoenix? Did you? The descendants of the phoenix?
Kiha is dancing to attract Hogae because Hwachon leader told her that its time to be aggressive and capture the heart of Hogae thus this meeting can confirm his conclusion that Hogae is the King . The symbol glows/reacts while shea w as dancing but Sujini has a nightmare that time.
The symbol seems to react when Sujini has can feel the fire, when it glows Sujini was having a nightmare at Yon’s Dungeon, when their house were burnt when she was a baby.

3) Kiha proclaimed herself as the guardian of the South and she used the phoenix heart and proclaim Hogae as the Joo Shin King
BUTS: The Hwacheon Leader chose her as the guardian of the phoenix because he thought she was the one, a mistaken conclusion because it glows when Sujini and DD pass through the him at Gooknae tournament field. Kiha manipulated the symbol to deceive people. The guardian of the symbol must recognize the Joo Shin King and not the fake King and DamDeok must be present with the emotions required.
Who were the people that recognizes Kiha as the guardian? The Hwachons, the elders and generals that they manipulated an act and Kiha uses the symbols’ power to convinced them that she’s the guardian…
-The Guhmool’s were not convinced.
-The oracle is not convinced and even asked Kiha, You are phoenix guardian and you should be on the side of the King, Who are you? What is your intention? Kiha is self -proclaimed guardian. The proof she needs to be the true guardian is the awakening of the symbol with certain emotions while DamDeok and Kiha is near to each other. No scenes like this, so I called her self-proclaimed guardian.
Kiha herself told this to Hogae: I’m not a suitable guardian. Neither the Phoenix nor the Joo Shin nation mean anything to me. They hold no value for me. How can I be the guardian?
4) On episode 7, Hyeongo thought that there can be two guardians, since Lord Hwangwoon took the fire from Kajin then given to Seo.
BUTS: On episode 18 to 24 ,Hyeongo and the GuhMools people still believe that Sujini is the possible guardian and phoenix because Kiha doesn’t not possess the whole characteristics of a phoenix but Sujini does.
Hyeongo: she’s one of two two things. She’s either genuine or fake!
If she’s the genuine guardian, then our Sujini is just a girl! But if she’s fake, then our Sujini is…I hope she’s not the real one…!
DamDeok: The one who said she’s the guardian.Why did you not killed her?
Hyeongo: We did not find any evidence that she was the Black phoenix.
Hyun Am: First, she must have the power of fire, second she will not be able to control it. Third, the emblem of the phoenix will be revealed on her body
Kiha: There was a high possibility that she was the Black Phoenix? Is that why she had to leave?
Hyeongo: I had hoped you would never be found. That’s the only way you would live long.
5.) On Episode 24 Kiha hung herself in the sky covered with fire
BUTS: When Seo exploded as phoenix it was unplanned but in case of Kiha it can be consider as planned. It can also be unplanned depending on viewers interpretations;
Kiha’s plans revealed to Hogae: Kiha planned to end everything, she wanted to Kill DamDeok and steal the power of Heaven. She will give everything away. After she accomplish her goal she’ll leave this world because she has nothing left here and Kiha wanted to end everything to end her bitterness.
And she accepted the love of Hogae, Will you wait for me? After I vent all
my bitterness in this life, we will meet again. Promise me.
Kiha’s plan revealed to DamDeok: She told DamDeok that she will collect the 4 symbols and get the power of heaven. If the need arises she will hung herself and raised Joo Shin Star. And if DamDeok doesn’t w ant to give the symbols, he better kill her now because she doesn’t know what else she is capable of. Before Kiha hung herself in the sky she already planned to do that beforehand unlike Seo. The reason why damdeok ask for forgiveness to Kiha because she already told him but he didn’t believe.
Seeing Kiha hung in the sky burning with fire gives DamDeok the idea the possibility of Sujini burning the whole world on fire. Can he allow such things to happen again?
Lord Hwangwoon killed Seo… Can DamDeok kill Sujini?
Lord Hwangwoon failed to do his duty so Damdeok must not fail this time…: Once is a mistake but twice is a sin, Sujini’s lines that DamDeok used to remember (probably he remembers it)

It is considered that the place where the symbols awakens , the possible owner is within their bloodline.
The 4 guardians are head in the place where they belong.
The symbols awakens in times that they are in battle with people who are opposed to the Joo Shin King
The 4 guardians, Hyeongo, Cheoro, Jumuchi and Sujini were chief/head of soldiers serving the Joo Shin King and Kiha is the oracle/priestess, the head of the temple of the Gooknae Castle who serves God and it’s people but wanted to challenge and take away the Heavenly power from the Joo Shin King.
The story gives the viewers the idea that Sujini is the real phoenix but to give a twist the story brings complexities to create chaos to identify who’s who in the story.
If Kiha is the Dark phoenix as what the subtitle stated and she seems to be the one who will release the fire/phoenix , then Sujini is what?
If Sujini is the true phoenix just what the story tried to implies then Kiha is what?
So if there are two phoenix after 2,000 years then both can explode at the same time. Why? Because both Kiha and Sujini can use the power of fire with or without the phoenix heart symbol. So in case Ajik dies, then Sujini will be angry. Kiha will be angry. Both of them raging in anger.. So what happens? Two black phoenix at the same time?
The ending make it looks like that Kiha is the black phoenix . The black phoenix is a result of raging anger. If Kiha is raging in anger, then the black phoenix/fire explosion is visible to burn the world because it will comes out immediately. Does it mean she can control her anger that’s why it seems she’s not that angry? She’s even conscious of what’s happening.
Granting Kiha is the black phoenix as what the subtitle stated. What we are looking for is the raging anger on Kiha.. . Is Kiha raging in anger?
For phoenix heart guardian, Raging anger is equal to black phoenix and black phoenix is equal to raging anger.
