THE LEGEND: Symbolism

Symbolism were usually present in some classical books like The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne it was also used in some movies like Liliana Cavani’s The Night Porter. The Legend also used symbolism that allows you to perceive ideas to understand it’s full content.

The following are the symbolism used in the story.

BOW -symbolizes emblem of Gods power, a judgement.

SWORD- symbolizes word of God and the word of God is true.
When Kiha stabbed DD with the sword. DD lived meaning the word of god is true.

Turtle Snake – Rain guardian, he possess the power to rule water. And head among Gods, most of the time Hyeongo controls or guide the King to balance his feelings, emotions and decisions.
Cane- serves as guide

Blue Dragon- cloud guardian , he has the power to rule woods. When your hope is clouded it gives hope and life. As Cloud guardian he can see everything in the sky.

Spear – the holy spear is able both to wound or destroy . It protect and save the life of the King and the other guardians. Cheoro can’t go without his Spear. Remember the following scene when He defeated the Hwachon leader by throwing the Spear. When Cheoro in an instant throw the spear to Hogae and the the White Tiger symbols was awaken and Jumuchi lived. When He put his hands to Sujini’s forehead, he holds his spear firmly when he saw Sujini opened her eyes. Possible reason why he hold it firmly: it can be an act of defense or firm holding of hope for Sujini’s life.

White Tiger- wind guardian , serves an innocent booster to the king

Iron Axe- is a symbol of authority and of the execution of military duty. It denotes a warlike quality of its bearer.

BIRDS- messenger / vehicle of communication

FIRE- The fire can provided humanity with protection, through its light and heat, against the many animals that might have attacked or hunted them. It has a supernatural force to destroy the world.

Phoenix - symbol for rebirth or transformation but in an immortal/never-ending sort of way, It is a continuous process.

THE SYMBOL OF LOVE OF THE JOO SHIN KING

the first symbol was the phoenix heartLord Hwangwoon gave the the heart of phoenix to Seo. He wanted Seo to protect the people of the South

the second symbol was the perfume bottle
King Damdeok gave the bottle of perfume to Sujini. He wanted Sujini to keep it and protect it.

Both the phoenix heart and perfume bottle is a reservoir.It’s a way to trap, capture, seal and secure what’s inside. That what kind of love that the JooShin King can give and entrust.
